Often times the folks who join us have this exact question on their minds but have not had the courage or the opportunity to get in front of an estate planning attorney and ask this question.
As you know it does take quite a bit of courage to approach an attorney...for many reasons.... but that's a whole different subject. ;)
Anyway, someone asked this question last night when Tim was speaking on the many different reasons that estate planning applies to more people than we generally think it does.
"Tim, when do you think is the right time for someone to have their Will done?" the woman in the audience asked. Tim simply responded, "Every adult needs something and it is always better to get it done when everything is great and you have no reason to think you will need a Will."
Sounds like the answer you might expect but IT IS SO TRUE.
Here is a great example: Selena Gomez, a 25 year old entertainer that has been diagnosed with Lupus disease and recently needed a kidney transplant. Her best friend was a match and happy to donate but immediately thought that she needed to get her affairs in order...just in case, according to the Wills, Trusts & Estates Prof Blog in "Selena Gomez BFF: I Wrote My Will Before Transplant."
The seriousness of a medical procedure can spur people into writing a will and protecting their family. This is not that unusual. Writing a will and creating an estate plan means having to think about the possibility of your own death or incapacitation. That is an uncomfortable thing to think about for most people, so they avoid the subject and do not get it done.
However Benjamin Franklin said it best, "...in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes." So why not plan when you have plenty of time to think, ponder, explore your options, and figure out the best plan for you and your family? This is important for all adults and at any age!
